Relentless Lord, by Amy Sandas

He is a hunter at heart…but her heart is no easy prey.

Hannah Walpole suspected the etiquette lessons her parents insisted upon were a wasted effort. Now, looking around at the ton at her debut, she’s sure of it. Her home is the African continent. She simply does not fit in English Society. Nothing will convince her otherwise, especially not a devilishly handsome lord with black hair, vivid green eyes and a wicked reputation for debauching innocent young women.

Lord Miles Whitely admires Hannah’s adventurous spirit and cool composure in the face of adversity. It doesn’t hurt that their first encounter provides him with the delightful opportunity to get his hands beneath her skirts.

When the lady declares she cannot be seduced, he cheerfully takes up the gauntlet she has unwittingly thrown down. But Hannah has no intention of succumbing to his striking gaze or honeyed flattery. Until a crisis leads her to suspect he’s not truly the cad everyone warned her about…

Warning: Contains one misfit debutante, one shamelessly flirty rake who finds humor in nearly everything, and a long, hot summer party in the country. Deploy your fans, ladies. Things are about to get steamy.

Relentless Lord by Amy Sandas
By M. E. Almaguer
Miss Hannah Walpole is hopelessly different. She’s the daughter of African explorers navigating the cold waters of her first London Season, sponsored by her uncle. But after two years of proper “training” in deportment and etiquette, she’s still an original, not at all like the simpering misses of the ton. Fortunately, she has a backbone, but she suffers in silence, bullied by her jealous cousin Beatrice and Beatrice’s snobbish friends.
Hannah and Miles’ first meeting is amusing and cute. Hannah is cool and calm, even when the handsome Lord Miles Whitely helps extract her from a painful garter mishap during a ball. With no other options, she reluctantly accepts his assistance without succumbing to hysteria as most other young women.
Hannah is also intelligent, wise, and completely genuine. In short, she knows herself. She has no airs or affectations and this draws Miles to her like a flame. Miles likes that she doesn’t scheme to be alone with him like most of the women he meets even as he notes her attraction to him. But Hannah refuses to be just one of his conquests.
“‘I think too much of myself to become another one of Lord Whitely’s ruined castoffs.’”
Miles wants to seduce Hannah but he is thrown for a loop (and aroused and impressed as hell) when she challenges him that she can probably get him to marry her before he can ever seduce her. Delighted, he accepts her challenge, confident that he will have no trouble eventually leading her to his bed.
The setting of this novella is a country house party, which is always a fun and relaxed way for letting one’s guard down and for getting to know members of the opposite sex in a more casual atmosphere.
Amy Sandas writes a sparkling and flirtatious story that is infectious and downright jubilant and fun to read. The energy is high and Hannah and Miles’ mutual attraction crackles on the pages but it’s also a very smart romance.
Miles has a reputation as a ladies’ man and seducer of women–Hannah’s own cousin Jacqueline claims he ruined her a few years ago–but Miles has been content to enjoy this questionable reputation even though he admits it isn’t true. He likes to joke and have fun and ignores society’s opinions. Until Hannah believes the rumors about him and it affects his chances with her.
For the first time, Miles realized the downside to years of false rumors and implied indiscretions.
But Miles is “relentless” in his pursuit of Hannah. Hannah battles with her feelings for Miles and Ms. Sandas captures her feelings well:
Although a great deal of her internal conflict came from the rather intense physical attraction she felt for the man, the rest had to do with the fact that she was coming to appreciate his humor, his easy manner, and the way he made her feel. She was more relaxed and like herself in his company than she had been in the last two years.
When Hannah is betrayed by her jealous and spiteful cousin, Beatrice, in a junior high school-like prank, I like that Hannah doesn’t wallow in self pity but, instead, takes her future into her own hands. However, the big love scene seems a little too convenient, especially coming so soon on the heels of the denouement. I expected more of a fuss at first so the scene seems a bit surprising even as it’s beautifully passionate. But this does not detract from my thorough enjoyment in the least.
Both Hannah and Miles are likeable characters. She is strong, beautiful, and clever and accepts that she doesn’t fit in society. But she is taken aback when she learns that Miles loves all these qualities, especially the last. Miles is a little frivolous but he’s also very dashing and gallant. He is taken by surprise by his own intense attraction to Hannah but their love story seems to move along at an unhurried pace, despite the fact that this is only nine chapters.
This book is reminiscent of Tessa Dare’s The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright in which a hero with a bad reputation wins the girl who sees right through him. Heartfelt, funny, and charming, this is a delightful read and I very much look forward to reading more by this author to watch.

Quick and Fun (3.5 stars)
By Book Gannet
This quick, Regency read is fun and charming – just as long as you can leave your history hat to one side. Hannah is definitely not your average debutante, being more used to the wilds of Africa than the ballroom jungles of England. Despite two years of intensive instruction from her family, she’s no closer to fitting in than when she arrived. Which is how she finds herself alone in a corridor at a country house party with a renowned rake’s hand up her skirt!

Okay, so it’s not quite as bad as it sounds, but that’s all part of the fun of this cheeky little read. Hannah is bright and independent, far from the blushing innocent that might be expected of the time. She’s used to criticism and catty behavior, but as she doesn’t much care for anyone in the country she isn’t really bothered. I would have liked to have known more about her parents and her travels, but I suppose there wasn’t really room in a story this short.

As for Miles (who surely should have been Lord Miles, if anything, and not Lord Whitely since he’s neither the oldest son nor has a deceased father), he’s fun and flirty and has a shocking reputation that I never quite understood – either why he allowed it to continue or how it managed to come about without him being challenged to numerous duels or forced into an unwanted marriage. It’s easy to see why he becomes intrigued with Hannah, though I have to say his behavior doesn’t always speak brilliantly of him if he really isn’t as roguish as he’s painted.

And all right, if I’m honest, there were a few things here and there that dinged my history and likelihood of accuracy hat (the title for one, the fact that the nearest village was two hours away – just how bad are these roads?, and the fact that Hannah can get soaking wet yet be dry by the time she reaches home and no one will comment on her hair, not to mention that her complexion is so perfect after a lifetime in hot places…), but the story passed by so smoothly and swiftly that I didn’t really have time to get annoyed.

If you’re looking for something quick and fun, with a hint of Regency romance, then you can’t go far wrong with this. It’s a light and easy way to spend an hour or two and I enjoyed it.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

Good Reading
By LAS Reviewer
She’s a dessert rose stuck in the constricting and harsh world of debutantes and she still managed to bloom brighter and standout.

Hannah was easy heroine to like and to root for. She’s not a simpering miss and while she’s certainly more worldly than the average young lady of the ton, she doesn’t flaunt her experiences and she isn’t cruel. She is confident, though. I don’t like when an author makes the female lead scared of her own shadow, afraid to speak up or walk away when in it’s in her best interest and I had to love it when Hannah admits to herself and Miles that she never lies to herself. That doesn’t mean she allows herself to indulge in every whim or desire but, she honest in that she what she wants.

I like Miles, too. He’s a middle child of a large family and he does what the middle child tends to do. He draws attention to himself by any means necessary, regardless of the positive or oftentimes negative results. I thought it was interesting, his reaction, when he realizes that not all attention is good. When his reputation, though unfounded, nearly costs him the girl. In the end, the author gave me hope that while Miles may see humor in almost all situations, he was mature enough to know when to follow his heart.

This is a quick little read that I would have easily enjoyed as a much longer story. Hopefully, Ms. Sandas will someday decide to revise this and let us meet the other cousin whose tales of ruination led Hannah to try to hold Miles at a distance. I’d like to have seen her reaction to seeing them so very happy together despite her lies. Also, I really really wanted to see Beatrice get what she deserved. What a twit! I hope she has to a marry that awful stick in the mud Lord Hathmore. They deserve each other. Lastly, there’s Grimm. Bless him! I want him to find a love match either with the woman his father wants him to marry (that would be a nice surprise) or with someone else and then he can stand up to his father say he’ll marry who he wants to.

Those kinds of thoughts are what let me know I really enjoyed a story. I’m able to imagine it drawn out further, side characters having larger roles, unexpected surprises. I walk away still thinking about the book. That’s a good read.

Regency historical romance is my first love in books and this was a satisfying read. I’ll be following this author to see if she continues this story in other books or simply to check out her other offerings. She has a clean, clear writing voice that put me right into the scene. The details are on target for the time period and I look forward to slipping back in time with her again.
