Peterson explores two central paradoxes: that only through a material object can a divine and invisible presence be authenticated and that Guadalupe’s images were made to work for enacting revolutionary change while preserving the colonial status quo. She examines the artists who created images of Guadalupe, their patrons, and the diverse viewing audiences for whom those images were intended. This exegesis reveals that visual evidence functioned on a par with written texts (treatises, chronicles, and sermons of ecclesiastical officialdom) in measuring popular beliefs and political strategies.

Jeannette Favrot Peterson is Professor of Art and Architectural History at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is the author of The Paradise Garden Murals of Malinalco: Utopia and Empire in Sixteenth-Century Mexico, which won the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Book Award, and coeditor of Seeing across Cultures in the Early Modern World.

A remarkable and beautiful book!!

This is a remarkable book. A real academic coup de force. The text
is fascinating, about the black madonna image, its meaning and origins,
and the illustrations are lovely. Jeanette Peterson is a respected art
historian and this work will surely merit her only more kudos.

This a very beautiful and wonderfully detailed volume

This a very beautiful and wonderfully detailed volume, but it elects not to acknowledge anything in support of the tilma image's acheiropoietic origins. Philip Serna Callahan's infra-red evaluation is dismissed in one sentence. Professor Petersen questions a statement in his monograph in which he writes that the mantle's color appears to be tempera, but also has the transparency of watercolor. She decides this is simple double-talk, even though it was just part of many findings which led to his summation that the Virgin's blue mantle color and condition are inexplicable. There's also no mention of the mid-1990s unearthing of the Codex Escalada or Ernest Burris' technical analysis of the mid-16th-century copy of the Nican Mopohua, found in the New York Public Library. The author's point of view is clear and she's welcome to it, but the work feels incomplete because of it. She is focused on proving how Juan Diego and his image evolved into a 17th-century miracle-mill, but this Guadalupe conspiracy theory never really rings true.

About the Author
Clive Poole is a Principal Teaching Fellow and Director of Telecommunications Industry Programmes at University College London (UCL). He has 30 years’ experience in the global electronics and telecommunications industries as well as academia. He started his career as a design engineer in several UK microwave companies, designing X-band and Ku-band amplifiers and oscillators for military and telecommunications applications. In the early 1990’s he founded an electronics design consultancy in Hong Kong that developed a number of successful wireless and telecommunications products for Chinese manufacturers. He has run several high technology businesses, including a bespoke paging equipment manufacturer and a large contract manufacturing operation. He was a pioneer in the business of deploying mobile phone networks on ocean going passenger ships. Dr Poole’s teaching is focused in the areas of electronic and microwave circuit design, wireless and mobile communications, technology business strategy and finance. He holds a BSc degree in Electronic Engineering and MSc and PhD degrees in microwave engineering from the University of Manchester. He also holds an MBA from the Open University. Dr Poole is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow the Institute of Engineering and Technology (FIET).

Izzat Darwazeh is the Chair of Communications Engineering in University College London (UCL) and head of UCL's Communications and Information Systems Group. He is an electrical engineering graduate of the University of Jordan and holds the MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Manchester in the UK. He has been teaching and active in microwave circuit design and communications circuits and systems research since 1991. He has published over 250 scientific papers and is the co-editor of the 1995 IEE book on Analogue Fibre Communications and of the 2008 Elsevier-Newness book on Electrical Engineering. He is also the co-author (with Luis Moura) of the 2005 book on Linear Circuit Analysis and Modelling. He currently teaches mobile and wireless communications and circuit design and his current research interests are in ultra high-speed microwave circuits and in wireless and optical communication systems. In addition to his teaching, Professor Darwazeh acts as a consultant to various engineering firms and government, financial and legal entities in the UK and worldwide. Professor Darwazeh is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow the Institute of Engineering and Technology (FIET).

Having taught Microwave Technology and Radio-Frequency Electronics for over 20 years, this is the closest book to my taught lecture courses. About the Author
Natalie M. Zahr, Ph.D. is a research scientist at Stanford University and SRI International. Her graduate education in the basic sciences included the study of neuro- anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology. After she completed graduate training as an electrophysiologist, she began postdoctoral training as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientist. Her current position as research scientist focuses on translational approaches using in vivo MR imaging and spectroscopy in studies of human alcoholics and rodent models of alcoholism with the goal of identifying mechanisms of alcohol toxicity on the brain. Her position allows her to explore emerging MR technologies and apply them to test relevant hypotheses. She has taught courses in Anatomy and Neuroscience at UC Berkeley Extension and enjoys sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for learning with her students. Her interests include traveling, hosting parties, skiing, kite surfing, scuba diving, hiking, and yoga.

Eric Peterson, Ph.D. is a research scientist at SRI International. Formerly he held research positions at Stanford University, the University of Bordeaux, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received his Ph.D. His training is in biomedical engineering and medical physics with a focus on the development and advancement of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The common thread of development of MRI techniques has led him to research asthma, cardiac obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Alzheimer’s dementia, stroke, and alcoholism. His current work is to develop new MRI methods in order to explore never before studied aspects of alcoholism. Outside of his research, he enjoys living in the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area, traveling, playing squash, and going rock climbing and hiking.
