B. H. Fairchild is America's best living poet and is in the running for best American poet ever. His new and collected is worthy of our highest literary awards. His command of language is reminiscent of Anthony Hecht. His intellect, wit, and big dose of common sense makes reading his poems a great and unforgettable pleasure.

B. H. Fairchild and Billy Collins:
Poetry Returns to the Masses.

Say what you will, story-telling poets have always struck a responsive and sympathetic chord to the fickled and transitory mind-set of a media-saturated society. Collins uses self-deprecating humor and universal aphorisms that seem indisputable to lure even the most anti-literary, anti-intellectual Lilliputians among us. Fairchild recounts such a detailed string of memorable events and their life-affirming implications that any of us raised in a working class world of post-war Midwest origins can only nod our heads and say, “Yes, I remember those times, those movies, those simple, yet-complex life styles under constant assault from a rapidly changing world of A Bombs, television tubes and planned obsolescence.”

Brilliant Collection

I loved B. H. Fairchild's previous poetry books, among them The Art of the Lathe, Early Occult Memory Systems of the Lower Midwest, and Usher and so looked forward with anticipation to reading The Blue Buick, New and Selected Poems. I can tell you, right off the bat, that you will be glad you bought this book.

Having sold our California house, my husband and I were on a cross-country trip which ended at the doorstep of our daughters who were both living in New York. As soon as we arrived, I settled in to read The Blue Buick from cover to cover, exploring earlier poems I was less familiar with. Halfway through, I started to slow down because I realized that I didn't want the book to end.

It goes without saying that Fairchild is the quintessential poet of the rural Midwest; its people and their lives rendered with tenderness and humor. His poetry has always and continues to wed intellectual and emotional complexity to a deep sense of awe. Of it, David Ulin of the LA Times has said the work, "transcends region and decade to explore the relationship of memory to the imagination and the mysteries of time and being."

And so, knee-deep in my own personal dislocation, I wanted that first reading of the Blue Buick to become a long, long journey. I wanted to stay in that world as long as I possibly could. Reading it made me feel a lot like I did when I read Melville's Moby Dick. Both great works of American literature. Both written by great American writers.

The author begins by presenting two basic inventory models: the economic order quantity model, which deals with "cycle stocks," and the newsvendor model, which deals with "safety stocks." He then describes foundational concepts, methods, and tools that prepare the reader to analyze inventory problems in which uncertainty plays a key role. Dynamic optimization is an important part of this preparation, which emphasizes insights gained from studying the role of uncertainty, rather than focusing on the derivation of numerical solutions and algorithms (with the exception of two chapters on computational issues in infinite-horizon models).

All fourteen chapters in the book, and four of the five appendixes, conclude with exercises that either solidify or extend the concepts introduced. Some of these exercises have served as Ph.D. qualifying examination questions in the Operations, Information, and Technology area of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

A practicing psychologist in Marin County, Calif., Levine counsels troubled teens from affluent families, and finds it paradoxical that wealth—which can open the door to travel and other enriching opportunities—can produce such depressed, anxious, angry and bored teenagers. After comparing notes with colleagues, she concluded that consumerism too often substitutes for the sorts of struggles that produce thoughtful, happy people. If objects satisfy people, then they never get around to working on deeper issues. The teen years are supposed to be a time for character building. Avoiding this hard work with the distraction of consumer toys can produce "vacant," "evacuated" or "disconnected" teens, Levine believes. She is particularly useful when explaining common parenting dilemmas, like the difference between being intrusive and being involved, between laying down rules and encouraging autonomy. Alas, while Levine pitches to the educated moms, since they do much of the actual child-rearing, she may be preaching to the choir. Those who need her most may be too busy shopping to pick up such a dire-looking volume. Still, school guidance counselors should be happy to have this clear, sensitive volume on their bookshelves. Wandering among suburban estates, sports clubs and prep schools are overlooked children of a perplexed generation. Their lives overflow with abundance and praise, yet ironically, the mask of apparent health and success may hide a gloomy world of emptiness, anxiety and anger. Strangely, argues Madeline Levine, a clinical psychologist practicing in Marin County, California, the nation’s latest group of at-risk kids comes from affluent, well-educated families. Despite advantages, these children experience disproportionately high rates of clinical depression, substance abuse, anxiety, eating disorders and self-destructive (even self-mutilating) behaviors, according to various studies. Based on criteria from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Levine says these children "are exhibiting epidemic rates of emotional problems beginning in junior high school and accelerating throughout adolescence." One may brush off these youngsters as overindulged products of wealthy, narcissistic parents. But Levine says many of these kids are really ill. They suffer from a weak sense of self, often struggling to fill inner emptiness with objects and praise. Too often they know something is wrong and grope desperately for help yet fail to escape a downward spiral. Could it be, Levine wonders, that privilege, high expectations, competitive pressure and parental overinvolvement yield toxic rather than protective effects? Levine explores such issues as social isolation, the fine line between parental underinvolvement and overindulgence, and the perverse role of money and material goods in creating false promises of fulfillment. Yearning for outward approval, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the delusion that wealth causes happiness. In many cases, a rude awakening occurs only after many years of anxiety and depression. Levine’s writing is surprisingly reflective and interesting. A constructive therapist, she offers practical guidelines and parenting strategies for those struggling with troubled teens. The advice is useful to any parent of any income level and includes ways to foster healthy autonomy, impulse control and sense of self. Levine emphasizes the importance of discipline, monitoring and limit setting as ways to encourage kids to construct healthy "inner" homes. More important, parents must "stand on their own two feet" before expecting their children to stand on theirs—noting that many parents scold their children for social behaviors that they themselves cannot manage, such as substance abuse and lack of self-discipline or self-assertion. Parents must strive to get their own inner homes in order before they can expect kids to straighten out theirs.

She offers advice on effective techniques to reduce pressure from parents to succeed in school and to heighten adolescent autonomy and self-discipline. Where was this book when I needed it 5 or 10 years ago?

I picked this book up almost by accident. But boy, am I glad I did. In "The Price of Privilege" (246 pages), author Madeline Levine, an accomplished psychologist who excels in dealing with troubled teenagers, examines the dangers and effects of teenagers growing up in an affluent environment. ("Affluent" is defined as a household earning $120,000 and more.)

I have to say that I was blown away by the observations in this book, even if, thankfully, I certainly have not experienced the worst-case scenarios described in this book with my own kids, who are now 19 and 16. Among many other things, Levine explains how "rewarding" kids by promising material things ("if you get an "A" on your test, I will buy you X or Y") has a long-term negative effect on kids. Levine also goes into depth about internal vs. external motivation, and why praise is often "bad" warmth for kids. As to "chasing perfection", Levine observes that "the pursuit of perfection is a diversion from the messiness of real life". So true! The main proposition made by the author is that, while of course it is important that we put our kids in a position to get good grades, even more important is that we help our kids with building their inner "self", which will prepare them for the long term. Reason why overinvolvement in our kids' lives is actually counterproductive.

I cannot emphasize enough what a wonderful job Levine does in describing the dangers of putting too much pressure on our kids. Which does not mean that she endorses a "slacker" attitude either. This book is about how we can best prepare our affluent kids for the long term. And it's not like the author is making a hypothetical or theoretical or academic case, giving ample real life evidence from her own practice and from studies around the country. I certainly recognized mistakes I have made, which I now wish I could've avoided, making me wonder wishfully, where was this book when I really needed it 5 or 10 years ago...

A compassionate and intelligent book

The author writes with empathy and insight about the 2 partners in the parenting dance: the children and the parents. She concentrates on the problems that children of competitive, professional affluent parents encounter as they try to find their way to adulthood. Rather too much about mother and too little about father for my taste and certainly not even a wave in the direction of gay parents. The particular parenting challenges faced by affluent parents of color also remain remarkably unaddressed. So a 4-star not a 5.

One of the Greatest books about medieval shoes on the market

The tower of London Press has never dissapointed me, and this book is no exception. Having done quite a bit of research on clothing artifacts, I can tell you that this book is excellent. The book contains quality pictures of shoes spanning the periods for anyone into such groups as the SCA, Renfaires, IFGS, and many other historical recreation groups. One of the best features of this text is that there are generally three views of each shoe. The first is the photograph of the actual item. The second is a drawing of the item, with any parts that time may have removed added back in. The third, and most unique that I've come across, is a picture of the pieces of the shoe flattened. This flattened view lets you make your own truly medieval shoes with a few simple measurements and pretty basic tools. Some knowledge of leatherwork is helpful. I also found it useful to understand how to utilise a sock-pattern for making a shoe. This book is an excellent reference for the shoe enthusiast from the level of the beginner all the way up to the seasoned expert.

The correct title of this book is 'Shoes and Pattens' and it's available at Amazon. A patten is a wooden base worn with a shoe to protect the shoe from mud and yuck. The book 'Shoes and Pattens' does contain patterns.

A Thought-Provoking Guide Into Human Actions & What To Learn From Them

Snap – Making The Most Of First Impressions, Body Language & Charisma by Patti Wood is a top-down analysis of the subject of body language.

The author conveys countless useful tools individuals can use to ascertain how people are feeling.

One of these aspects Wood focuses on rather trenchantly is nonverbal cues that individuals displace which showcase what type of emotions they are feeling.

Other notable points that the author delves into range from the importance of posture, handshakes, the depths of eyes, the positioning of feet, to hand positions, smiles, and much, much more. The author does a stellar job of showing why attention to these key areas of the human body is vital.

Example after example, the author gives various anecdotes, some personal, many not, of instances where the reader is able to glean the data she provides playing out in a ‘classic’ way. These are very helpful, and for me helped bring forth past memories of scenarios of myself of others going through rather similar situations.

All in all, the book is straight forward to understand, and its concepts are easy to learn/apply.

This well-rounded analysis into human bodily behaviour should be highly regarded and sought after by all individuals. After all, a well rounded approach to interpreting body cues is useful for most if not all people. It would be a straightforward way to increasing an your repertoire.

First impressions matter more than most of us realize and this book helps with better awareness on how you may be unknowingly affected by the body language of others. Wood effectively uses stories to illustrate her points so the book is an easy read but she also includes source documentation for claims she makes. Shaded areas (sidebars) provide additional insight and useful tips.

People are very emotional animals and those emotions insure our survival by communicating quickly with others our true intent. She includes background information and a lively discussion on all this. A very interesting read. The book will get me to think about my own first impressions upon meeting new people: what I like, dislike and what I am reacting to .

I look forward to seeing one of Wood's presentations live. I see her occasionally in the media when she is asked to analyze the body language of politicians, celebs, or newsmakers and she is a dynamic and engaging speaker.

I have read several books and have studied body language for quite some time. I was expecting a lot of repeat information when I started this book. I was surprised that in reading this book I was both entertained and pepped up about the framework in which the information was presented. You can tell that she is an experienced public speaker and consultant - because she presents the information well, of course because she has had to do so in public speaking and consulting.

Snaps, open windows, "feel, show say" - these are all easily understood concepts that are easily applied.

I am recommending this book to anyone who has a desire or need to place themselves before a public or new people. It will help you with your body language in such a way as to let your true self shine, and make others feel comfortable, and confident with you and the interaction.
