Great for learning or as a reference.

I used the first edition of Anderson's Atlas of Hematology during my Hematology course of my medical laboratory science program and loved it. This edition is even better. Many of the pictures are now higher quality, and more time was put into the descriptions of the cells and disorders. I liked that both the FAB and WHO classification systems were used for leukemias. Not only is this a great book for learning practical Hematology, but it is also a great reference in clinical practice. I refer to it often when I come across a tricky cell while doing manual differentials. Maybe I'm a bit of a Hematology nerd, but I really like this book. That being said, if you already have the first edition, it would be completely understandable if you didn't want to spend the money on the new one. They are both great books. The second one is just a little more updated.

Gift for graduating FNP

Gift for my sister-in-law who love particularly loves hematology and just graduated and became licensed as an FNP. She loved it. Great book, but very heavy and floppy. It should be a hard back to protect it, but I see how the spiral helps it lay flat open for research purposes. The edges of the pages got bent before we could even give it to her because of the floppiness. There's no good way to "wrap it" without putting it in a sturdy box and filling it with bubble wrap. I hope it holds up. Also the pictures seemed slightly blurry… but I guess they're still clear enough to be useful!

Whether she chronicles the obsessions of a broken-hearted, jilted lover trying unsuccessfully not to circle the block of her ex-girlfriend's apartment, or the humiliation of being offered donated, unwashed clothing as part of the alternately boring and anxious "processing" into the U.S. as a political refugee from Castro's Cuba, Obejas' prose moves us. The down-to-earth stories in this debut collection from a Chicago Tribune columnist are pleasing, although they occasionally fail to connect to larger themes. Several of Obejas's narrators are lesbians trying to understand how relationships ought to work. In ``Wrecks'' the narrator explains that she regularly gets into car accidents when romance fades, and since her girlfriend has just left her she is preparing for a crash. The narrator of ``The Cradleland'' confides her fantasy of being ravished in a public bathroom and worries about safe sex even between lesbians since her (male) roommate and best friend is dying of AIDS. In ``Forever'' a lesbian activist trying to sort our her past (she says of her ex-lover, ``We're good lesbians: we've been painfully breaking up for two years'') subjects her current lover to ``the porch test,'' which means trying to imagine the two of them old together, sitting in a rocking chair on a porch. These are very accessible, sweet stories that, while appealing, do not have the lasting effect of the darker work here. The title story, the history of an immigrant Cuban family from the daughter's point of view, is more successful as well as more complex. Fragmented memories contain telling details, such as the summer the narrator's father finally buys a television set after insisting for years that it would be too difficult to transport one back to Cuba, and therefore symbolically accepts that they will remain in the US. ``Above All, a Family Man'' follows a dying man and his married lover as they drive from Chicago to Santa Fe. It both traces their relationship back to its origins and covers the married Rogelio's insistence that he cannot be at risk for AIDS because he is not gay. In ``Man Oh Man'' a heroin addict tells of the last time shooting up with a man named Ice who is now dead. Brings the marginalized front and center. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. This book can save you from yourself when investing

Each year, there are hundreds of books written on the subject of stock market investing. Most of them are not worth the investment of one's time or money. Every once in a while, a new classic hits the market. This book is one of those new classics on investment writing.
Howard Marks, Chairman of Oaktree Capital Management, writes clearly and persuasively about the importance of risk avoidance when investing in stocks. He emphatically states his belief that risk avoidance by buying at a good value is the key to success. He then spends the rest of the book telling the reader the 18 most important things to consider when buying stocks. His discussion of investor psychology is worth the price of the book by itself. Everything else is a bonus.
I had been meaning to read this book for a year or so. When I learned that an annotated edition, with comments from some leading value investors, I grabbed it. I took my time reading it, as there is so much great information within. The final chapter, in which Marks pulls all 18 important things together, is now something I intend to re-read several times a year, like I do with Chapters 8 and 20 of Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor.
Highly recommended.

A Classic Made Even Better

I have to say I was very excited to learn that this new edition was going to be released as I found the first edition of his book to be a seminal investing work, one that deserves to be on the same shelf as The Intelligent Investor, Security Analysis, Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits, and the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters.

I was not disappointed when I read my review copy. I found that the annotated comments highlighted important sections in the text while also providing additional compelling perspectives but yet didn't get in the way of the flow of the book.

Don't just take my word on this, here are a few examples:

p. 58: Howard Marks: Understanding uncertainly: Dimson's formulation reminds us of a very simple concept: that many things are possible in the future. We can't know which of the possibilities will occur, and this uncertainty contributes to the challenge of investing. "Single scenario" investors ignore this fact, oversimplify the task, and need fortuitous outcomes to produce good results.

p. 104: Seth Klarman: Even the best investors judge themselves on the basis of return. It would be hard to evaluate yourself on risk, since risk cannot be measured. Apparently, the risk-averse managers of this endowment were disappointed with their relative returns even though their risk adjusted performance was likely excellent, as borne out by their performance over the following three years. This highlights just how hard it is to maintain conviction over the long run when short-term performance is considered poor.

Please allow me to make one additional comment on the annotations before I discuss the new chapter. I was not familiar with Mr. Johnson before reading his collection of annotations in the book but I found them insightful and thought provoking. I wish my college career had included being a student in his classes. You can find more information on him at this site: [...].

The new chapter is called Reasonable Expectations. This chapter develops the theme that investors need to keep their expectations grounded in reality to guard themselves from overreaching and thus taking on far more risk than is reasonable. Mr. Marks cautions his readers that one can never know when the exact right time to make a purchase is. Focus on buying it when its trading at below your estimate of value with the understanding that if its gets cheaper you will buy more as the price declines. The point is not to become despondent if a stock declines after your purchase it because being able to catch the absolute button is nearly impossible.

Here is a quote from this chapter in which Mr. Marks is telling his readers how an investor should have been thinking in the dark period of 2007-2009:

"I need 8 percent. I'd be glad to earn 10 percent instead. Twelve percent would be even better. But I won't try for more than that, because doing so would entail risks I'm just not willing to bear. I don't need 20 percent."

I find that comment particularly interesting when you consider that Mr. Buffett has spoken on the record many times that he looks for investments that can earn him 15%.

In conclusion I certainly think the chapter is a valuable addition to the book. This new material, along with the added annotations, make the new edition a worthwhile purchase. All in all this new edition does the nearly impossible, it takes an already classic text and makes it an even more indispensable tool for investors!

Great Book - annoying commentaries

Howard Marks is one of the great investment thinkers. This book provides tremendous insight into the nature of risk and return. For example, higher prices mean both lower expected returns and higher risk (which is counter to Modern Portfolio theory).

Unfortunately, I found the comments in the "illuminated" version distracting. There were some insightful comments (mostly from Marks himself) but they were inserted into the middle of the chapters. I would prefer to have the comments at the end so I could keep my stream of thought.

I would probably recommend the un-illuminated version.

This book equips readers with tools for computer architecture of high performance, low power, and high reliability memory hierarchy in computer systems based on emerging memory technologies, such as STTRAM, PCM, FBDRAM, etc.  The techniques described offer advantages of high density, near-zero static power, and immunity to soft errors, which have the potential of overcoming the “memory wall.”  The authors discuss memory design from various perspectives: emerging memory technologies are employed in the memory hierarchy with novel architecture modification;  hybrid memory structure is introduced to leverage advantages from multiple memory technologies; an analytical model named “Moguls” is introduced to explore quantitatively the optimization design of a memory hierarchy; finally, the vulnerability of the CMPs to radiation-based soft errors is improved by replacing different levels of on-chip memory with STT-RAMs.

About the Author
Pete Babich is an electrical engineer. He learned the concepts of Hoshin Kanri while employed at Hewlett-Packard. He facilitated Hoshin implementation at the San Diego Division back in 1986. SDD was not the first HP division to implement Hoshin Kanri, but it was recognized as a "best practice" for Hoshin implementation. Pete left HP in 1991 to form Total Quality Engineering Inc. Since that time, he has helped numerous organizations is all industry segments to implement Hoshin Kanri. The Hoshin Handbook has been the basis for his Hoshin workshops and Hoshin Kanri software.

Excellent Hoshin "How To" Reference Book

Pete Babich has prepared an excellent Handbook on how to implement a Hoshin Plan. It is clear, concise, and to the point.

Companies that are interested in implementing a Hoshin Plan should definitely add this to their library.

He also includes a CD of Hoshin templates. In my opinion, the value is in the cultural transformation from traditional to Hoshin. Sometime the IT systems and software get in the way of the transformation (we spend too much time worrying about the numbers and not enough time aligning the organization).

Disappointing Rehash of Business Planning 101 Concepts and Theory

This book needs an urgent update given the demand for agile strategic and product planning, and advances in the Performance Excellence model topic (see Global Excellence Model Council - GEM) and NIST's Baldrige Performance Excellence framework. The general theme seems to replay business and marketing planning 101 theory, explaining the cascade between vision, values, mission and then of course strategies etc. This can be found in many other highly awesome sources, many of which are cited in the bilbiography.

However, I just did not see how its practical given today's flatter management structures to embark on a detailed and lengthy 'Hoshin Planning' exercise that lacks a tangible connection to a continuous improvement or transformation program. How do you keep it current? Also, the problem and root cause analysis examples were at best 'basic'. No indication of how impact drives involvement and propels action. I just don't think an 'annual breakthrough cycle' is plausible in today's high pace economy.
