Fourteen-year-old Georgia Nicolson is back in British author Louise Rennison's irreverent, laugh-out-loud sequel to the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging. Written in diary form, these truly hilarious books chronicle the often minute-by-minute, very dramatic, and significant flip-flops of a teenager's psyche.

What tragedy has her so distraught? Her parents have told her she's moving to New Zealand just when she's managed to snog (kiss--look it up in the glossary) the SG (Sex God, a.k.a Robbie). This is of course not the only source of drama in Georgia's eventful life. Her half Scottish wildcat, Angus, who is the size of a small Labrador, herds the poodles next door and terrorizes the neighborhood. Her little sister, Libby, who is slightly mad, stores her "pooey knickers" and her scuba-diving Barbie doll in Georgia's bed. Her mother (from whom she inherited her orangutan eyebrow gene and possibly her "gigantic basoomas") is clearly inhabiting Earth solely to make her life miserable, and even her best friend Jas is "half girl, half turnip."

Despite the fact that she's spared from going to "Kiwi-a-gogo land," things don't get much better for Georgia. She's suspended for a childish prank right before her dad returns from New Zealand, she falls in love with the SG who dumps her for being too young, and Dave, the "red-herring" boyfriend she's using to make the SG jealous calls her a "heartless whatsit." And, she continues, "the spot on my bum is probably a boil. I wonder what Buddha would do now?" Rennison's comedic timing is brilliant. Adolescent angst ("I hope I am not driven to the brink of madness by grief") vanishes less than an hour later ("Angus can fetch sticks!!!") and sometimes even sooner. A witty, fun read

I decided to re-read this series just for fun, for a light quick read on breaks at work and so on. I laughed out loud all over again, it's nice to revisit Georgia and her crazy life, to take a peek into the wacky and self-absorbed mind of a teenager and remember what it was like when boys and friends and lip gloss were top priorities in life. 'On the Bright Side...' had always been one of my favourites, and probably one of the funniest out of all the books. Would definitely recommend.

The Sex God has landed...

That is true in this book. This realistic fiction will take you inside Georgia's emotions while you learn about boyfriends and friendship.

Georgia and her best friend Jas getting in fights and don't talk to each other. Georgia tries to get back together with Robbie who she calls the Sex God. Teenage life takes over this book with its funniness and sadness.

There are five books to this series and counting: Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging, Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas, Dancing in My Nuddy-Pants, and Away Laughing on a Fast Camel. Her witty comments and diary-formatted book make this book the greatest!

I would say teenage girls would love this book most. But if you're older or younger and want to read it be my guest because I think that you would love it too!!!!

Not just for teens!

Even as a 40+ year old, I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. I read the first before placing it in a middle school library and knew right away it would be a hit with the teen crowd, but I also recommended it to several adults. As soon as I knew the next installment was available, I ordered it immediately. The sequel manages to maintain the originality and charm of the first. Georgia's quite a girl--a typical teen, but with a dry sense of humor and an ability to poke fun at herself. The supporting cast returns in full force--Robbie,AKA the Sex God, her friends, family, and of course, Angus who, in this book, suffers along with Georgia through the throes of love. Just as in the first, I found myself laughing out loud, finally giving way to tears. All in all, this is a delightful book that can be enjoyed, certainly by its' intended teen audience, but also by a slightly older crowd.

Intuition is like a guidepost on the road

Over the years I have read dozens of books on topics dealing with intuition. By far, Navigating by Intuition is the easiest to follow and understand.

An excellent resource for those brand new to understanding intuition. A refreshing reminder to those who have a deep understanding of intuition.

Author, Angela Artemis, gives practical examples of how to fine tune one's intuition. She clearly conveys how simple it actually is. Sign posts are everywhere; we simply need to know how to recognize what is right in front of us.

Using examples from her own life, from the Chinese Coin to being "pushed" out of a work situation that no longer served her, Angela shows how each and every day we have the opportunity to honor our intuition.

A fast read that can be done in one sitting. Well worth the investment.

An Eminently Practical Guide

I'm an anthropologist by training and will be the first to admit the universe is wider than we know. Your inner world, however, can be accessible with the the right tools. Angela Artemis explains those tools in Navigating By Intuition. Navigating is a beautifully expressive word here -- think compass and a map.

Let me give you two examples. We all know meditation can heal, can guide, can calm. But I've often been put off by the sectarian nature of certain meditation practices. Angela shares a natural, non-religious meditation that I find completely doable on a regular basis.

Angela also explains signs and portents. That sounds mystical, but in reality, they, too, are tools. When you choose a symbol that means something to you, it can inform every decision you make.

Begging for an Expansion

Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't a system for handling chronic upper respiratory infections.
This is the d20 system role-playing game for the Wheel of Time system, at least for the first six novels...the character stats given are as of the end of Lord of Chaos. It offers a more-or-less complete game system that's surprisingly good.
Included are entirely new core (i.e. 20-level classes) and prestige classes, such as the algai'd'siswai (Aiel spear-fighter), armsman, wanderer, woodsman, noble, initiate, and wilder, which are more appropriate to the world than those listed in the D&D PHB. They use the standard skill and feat system. There are two playable races, humans and Ogier (the big guy on the cover); humans get an extra skill point and an extra background feat, in a fashion similar to the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
Feats are mostly standard, but include the various channeling feats and Lost Feats, which are limited by the need to take a precursor feat before taking the real feat, which should keep them rare. Equipment is mostly normal, with mention of power-wrought swords and other wondrous items, such as masterpiece weapons and armor (like masterwork, but better).
Channeling...ah, channeling. As others have mentioned, it's put in as a spell slot system, but the available slots represent a safe limit. You can overchannel all you want, but sooner or later it'll cost you. The weaves listed have variable effects based on the slot used, which is nice. They have a decent way of handling linking and angreal and sa'angreal, but I'll get more into that later. And, for male channelers, there's the joy of the Madness mechanic.
Included are character descriptions for most of the major hero characters (Rand, Mat, Thom, Lan, Moiraine, etc.), as well as MM-style descriptions of the various beasts and exotic animals found in the setting. Sadly, no Forsaken are depicted, yet. One will also find standard rules, some setting information, and advice on running the game.
On the whole, I'm quite impressed. It's a nice and coherent system, and works better than I thought. I can't find much to complain about, other than some minor quibbles...such as some of the character write-ups being wrong (some people not having abilities that they demonstrated in the novels, or equipment, etc.).
What I'd like, of course, is an expansion or two...obviously, they'll have to do one the farther the storyline goes. I think that short prestige classes for each of the Ajahs might be nice, and lists of where Portal Stones and the Ogier Ways are would be very helpful (aside from GM fiat).
But, what I'd really like is an Age of Legends expansion...with all sorts of lost weaves and feats for item creation. Gosh, that'd be cool.

It only gets better...

I decided to wait until I'd read the entire 3E expansion for The Wheel of Time before finally writing this review, which is good, because otherwise I'd have given it that fifth star it almost deserves.
Firstly, I'd like to say that, on the whole, the adaptation is fantastic. The expansion is almost totally self-contained, so the player won't need to purchase another item once all the necessary sourcebooks have been procured...AS LONG AS HE'S FAMILIAR WITH THE WHEEL OF TIME. That's right: while the book does give some fairly decent brief descriptions of the lands, its peoples, and the storyline, it honestly doesn't cut the mustard for a newbie to the series. Needless to say, as the GM for my group, I've been busy explaining to two of my players everything about the world of the Wheel of Time, and trying to make one of them understand why he can't call his character "Dragon."
The layout is above average, and the typos and misprints are nearly nonexistent...but I did say "nearly." If anyone finds out what the "Quickness" feat is, e-mail me. The artwork is also well-placed and of high quality, but that was to be expected.
The translation of One Power usuage was sheer genius. Give the man a cookie. About a year ago I spent two months trying to adapt such an idea to D&D3E rules, and finally quit because I was starting to pull my hair out. I'm thoroughly impressed.
The final verdict: if you're a Wheel of Time fan who plays RPGs, buy it. If you're an RPG fan who's read the Wheel of Time, buy it. If you're a Wheel of Time fan who wants to play RPGs, this is the reason to start.

Prepare to be Amazed

The Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game is based upon the science-fantasy series of the same name by Robert Jordan... If you are a fan of Jordan's series you need little else to modivate you... your dream has come true.
Regular players of the d20 system may need more convincing.
This MONSTROUS 317 page hardback has everything a fan of the WoT could ask for and does it for the only SLIGHTLY painful price (...).
It is all here... and condensed for immediate play. This rule book contains all the rules you need in one place (hence the size and cost increase)... no need for a player's handbook, monster manual or Dungeon Master's Guide.
Presented are the myriad human cultures of the WoT presented in great and loving detail and the Ogier are also presented as a player race. Core classes for the players capture the feel of the setting and whet your appitite for the prestige classes to follow (I mean, REALLY, you didn't think you were going to START play as an Asha'man, Aes Sedai, Warder or Wolfbrother did you?).
Fear not, from Asha'man to Gleeman to Thief-Taker, all of the concept of the WoT series are handled with reverance for the author's design and the d20 multi-classing methodology helps to frame the character concepts well...
New feats (including lost arts like dream-walking) are presented along-side those from the PHB.
Channelling and the One source are well defined and structured and some "Weaves" are labelled "LOST" for the players (like the Heroes of the Novels) to discover (Balefire anyone?).
Topping off this excellent product are sections on running the game and faithful interpretations of the exotic monsters of the settings...
Those who want to see their favorite character's stats will NOT be disappointed as the heroes of the tale (and some of the villians) are given the star treatment...
Finally, and I can not express this enough, the artwork on this piece is GORGEOUS... it is a delight to the eye and fits beautifully within the framework of the book's layout (which is also quite beautiful).
Fan of the WoT or not, this product is a big win for d20 system.

They basically help the Professor set up every lab. I am developing a molecular lab from scratch and this book is a great reference. They list the equipment needed in a molecular lab, supplies at each work station, preps for each lab for lab technicians. These authors really put a lot of work into this. The ONLY hiccup (and I hope they are reading this to prepare for their next edition). It would be nice if they added another appendix that lists the equipment, the company AND item number, so that I can purchase the correct items. It is well written. The curriculum is a great layout. They even have real-time PCR as one of the experiments which is exciting. Latest molecular techniques. I think I'' have fun with this!

Fairly comprehensive but "Lite" overview.

This is a fairly comprehensive overview of loudspeakers. It's mostly a collection of information from other sources - especially JBL where the author worked - and lot of it is of interest and some of it is hard to find elsewhere. It's well worth a read by an enthusiast. But there's not much depth and it seems a bit careless. It lost a star because it had a few too many inconsistent constants, incorrect units and similar errors for it's considerable price.

This is a great book for a person who is intersted in the math and technical aspects of speaker design. I used this book as a refernce while working on my senior thesis and it proved very helpful. This is not a book for beginners.

Inspiring....Should be Required Reading for All Members of Humanity

If you are already familiar with the work of Bill McDonough ("BM") and Michael Braungart ("MB", together "BMMB"), then my glowing praise should come as no surprise and you can probably stop reading my review and go get your copy now. As a bioentrepreneur running a company, I am well read on current thinking involving sustainability, biomimicry, biology, and futurism. All the same I just checked out and devoured this book in a day. My high expectations were not disappointed, and the marathon read spurred my creativity not just in business but all the way through the cycle down to my family life, which was the intention.

In 1992 BMMB publicly presented the "Hannover Principles", a sustainability manifesto which advocates transcending basic design principles by also considering the impact on health and the environment, how the design impacts things on the periphery and identifying those relationships, eliminating waste and optimizing efficiency, and striving to holistically improve the end product. Together they identified and analyzed thousands of industrial materials and produced a ranking system that delineated their qualities along the lines of toxicity and true recyclable sustainability (as opposed to "downcycling", or reusing the materials of a primary product to produce something else with less and less quality/utility in the future). This work led to a major series of high level consultations producing a "butterfly effect" that is positively impacting us all, and will continue to do so ad infinium.

Ten years later they wrote "Cradle to Cradle", which looked at how products could be made better by applying the Hannover Principles, and that doing so would make companies more profitable. I still count Cradle to Cradle as one of the best and most fascinating business books I have read, and this was largely due to the outstanding examples of how major corporations like Ford and Interface were able to make strategic changes that resulted in superior products, less harmful materials, less waste, etc. I refer to it as a business book in part because BMMB do not blame capitalism for all our troubles. Quite the opposite, they profoundly advocate it as an essential engine of progress and correctly illustrate through example (in both books) how an intention or lack of one will dictate a positive or negative outcome.

Rather than rewrite Cradle to Cradle, the authors set out to explain why it exists, which they richly describe as follows, "The goal of The Upcycle is a delightfully diverse, safe, healthy, and just world with clean air, water, soil, and power - economically, equitably, ecologically, and elegantly enjoyed". Ambitious? BMMB suggest that if Cradle to Cradle principles are widely adopted then this would be the result and that the process would be endless through constant improvement; a true "Virtuous Cycle".

In the 10-years following Cradle to Cradle, BMMB have had continuous forward momentum putting these principles into practice not just with major global corporations, but even with governments like China (who desperately need this help, for the sake of our entire biosphere). As such, BMMB have enjoyed a unique position working with and influencing powerful global forces and driving them towards positive progress. "The Upcycle" reflects this refined experience. It is a call to action for all of society to become conscious not just of what they design and produce, but also of how their decisions on consumption affect waste or produce toxicity, and that our choices thus affect future generations and indeed our planet. It asks us to consider not just how we can do a little here or there producing a "less bad" impact, but instead to analyze and discover how we can improve our habits and become a true force of positive impact. A simple example of putting this into practice is to begin zero consumption of products made by companies that fail to adopt these practices, thus depriving them of any economic reward (I haven't given fast food a single penny since 1989, nor do I patronize certain airlines or banks). When we empower ourselves and hold them accountable they are forced to change or they will disappear, and either outcome is a positive result.

There are many ideas present that will inspire business managers and leaders to consider how they can optimize their processes and designs, and thus is arguably the best $15 you could spend on unleashing your creativity by challenging how you do things from the bottom to the top. As it is intended, it is no less valuable for everyone else as it teaches us to have higher expectations of industry, society, and ourselves. The Forward is by Bill Clinton who says the Optimist's glass is half full, the Pessimist's is half empty, while BMMB's glass is always full of half water and half air. Classic.

Just as Cradle to Cradle was printed according to the best available practices of the time, The Upcycle's concepts were employed in printing this non-toxic biodegradable book to the highest standards of today; once again very cool. I'm looking forward to reading it again, which is rare.

Cradle to Cradle, release 2.0

C2C and The Upcycle

William McDonough, an American architect, and Michael Braungart, a German chemist, combined to write Cradle to Cradle (C2C). C2C, published in 2002, discusses product design, with emphasis on materials utilization efficiency in an environmental context. C2C proposes that product design consider negative effects, especially toxicity, to humans and the natural world at every step in the product's value chain, including disposition when the product is no longer useful. In essence, C2C goes beyond "cradle to grave" design, which ends at a landfill or an incinerator, to "cradle to cradle" design, where non-toxic materials are reclaimed, recycled or reused in generation after generation of products.

Recently, the same two authors published The Upcycle. The Upcycle isn't really a sequel to C2C. Rather, as its title implies, it is an expansion on C2C, based on experience -- in this case, two decades of experience. Think of The Upcycle as another generation of the same product, rather like release 1.0 and release 2.0 of a software package.

Here are a few of the key ideas from The Upcycle:

>> More good, rather than less bad: The general approach to environmental impacts and human well-being is to do less bad -- reduce atmospheric emissions, reduce industrial accidents and reduce waste to landfill, for example. The Upcycle asserts that reduction, even reduction to zero, isn't sufficient. Production should aim beyond shrinking its negative footprint on the world to producing an increasing positive footprint. Where the term "sustainability" confers a sense of steady state, "upcycle" suggests continuing improvement, product generation over product generation

>> Design as a latchkey to abundance: I bought The Upcycle because of its subtitle: Beyond Sustainability -- Designing for Abundance. The book proposes that design -- tangible product design, as well as process and systems design -- can lead to upcycling, and that an emphasis on upcycling leads away from a world of scarcity to a world of abundance.

>> "Biosphere" vs. "Technosphere": The Upcycle distinguishes between the "biosphere" -- the natural world and its biological cycles -- and the "technosphere" -- the realm of the synthetic. Natural products and natural cycles provide models for design within the technosphere. However, the recovery processes in the two spheres differ significantly, such that mixing natural materials with synthetic materials in the same product may impair upcycling.

>> Regarding toxicity: C2C and The Upcycle both regard toxicity as both cumulative and pernicious. Cradle to cradle design relies on detailed assessment of the potential toxicology of all components of every material used in the manufacture of a product. The level of concern goes well beyond most governmental regulations on toxicity, as they existed at the beginning of the current century.

The Upcycle provides the term "enchanted skepticism", which describes my general reaction to that book. Many of the ideas are fascinating. I'm quite convinced that radical improvements in materials utilization, across product generations, are possible. Recent product and process design innovations in the automobile industry and in building construction present interesting cases in point, although The Upcycle affords little attention to either. However, favorable examples are one thing. Broad practicability across a wide range of manufactured products may be another.

This book needs an 'upcycle' too

I'm a fan of the work of McDonough and Brungart, and believe they're on the right track with their important work. Cradle to Cradle, their previous book, hit a home run, IMO. This one, unfortunately, does not--it reads more like a pastiche of repurposed speeches and presentations than an organized progression of information and ideas. That might have been more tolerable if the book itself were more attractive. Unfortunately, though it's been manufactured to the best-available sustainability standards, its typography smacks of low-end word-processing. Differentiation between subheads and text is lacking, margins and indentations are unattractive, and chapter dividers are clumsy. The simplistic graphics add little informational value. Several inserts on pale gray paper, crammed with tiny sans serif typography, are awkwardly interspersed and interfere with the book's flow. Most concerning is that, for a book that concerns science and product engineering, there is no index. This book deserves a design and editing "upcycle" of its own.

William James on Education

Beginning in 1891, William James gave frequent lectures to teachers in which he explained the psychology he had developed in his "Principles of Psychology" and offered suggestions on applying the science of psychology to the art of education. Similarly, beginning in 1895, James delivered a series of lectures to college students -- generally at schools for women -- on education and its purposes. In 1899, James gathered both sets of lectures together and published them as "Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals." The book was read widely and became financially successful for James.

In his illuminating recent biography of James, "William James in the Maelstrom of American Modernism", Robert Richardson describes the "Talks" as a whole as "written in what we may call William James's third style." He explains: "The third style is his plainest, clearest, most public style. It is at once vivid, personal, comprehensible, and without a shred of condescension. It is best exemplified in 'Talks to Teachers'. The longer James worked over a subject, the simpler and shorter and more direct he made it". (p. 360)

The two sets of lectures are complementary with the first set explaining to teachers how psychology could be of use in the educational process while the second set explains to the students the value of the educational opportunities presented to them. The "Talks to Teachers" begins with what many people at the time saw as a mechanistic psychology rooted in physiology and developed in light of Darwin's theory of evolution. In many places, James encourages teachers to see a pupil in part as "a subtle little piece of of machinery." An effective means of education endeavors to work with rather than against the nervous system. In successive short chapters, James discusses his fundamental theory of the "stream of consciousness" and applies it to learned behavior through exploration of reactions, habits, association, attention and memory. The lectures are lucid and clear and show both flexibility and wisdom in considering the process of education.

James's focus throughout is on education as an activity fitting the student for the conduct of life in a wide variety of situations rather than as means of learning intellectual abstractions. James stresses the importance of the body and of physical activity in the learning process. His psychology begins with science and mechanism but it does not end there. I would like to point out two of what I found to be among the insightful observations of the "Talks to Teachers." First, in the chapter on "Memory", James points out that the psychological abilities of the mind must be taken together in an individual and that a person need not be "cast down" by deficiencies in any single element. James stresses passion and desire as critical in overcoming any mechanical difficulties. He writes: "You can be an artist without visual images, a reader without eyes, a mass of erudition with a bad elementary memory. In almost any subject your passion for the subject will save you. If you only care enough for a result you will almost certainly attain it."

The other passage in the "Talks to Teachers" I wish to single out is in the concluding chapter on "The Will". Here James allows Spinoza to have the last word. James points out that there are two ways in which people can make choices: by saying "no" to something or by saying "yes" to its contrary. James opts for the latter approach. James writes: "Spinoza long ago wrote in his Ethics that anything that a man can avoid under the notion that it is bad he may also avoid under the notion that something else is good. He who habitually acts sub specie mali, under the negative notion, the notion of the bad, is called a slave by Spinoza. To him who acts habitually under the notion of good he gives the name of freeman. See to it now, I beg you, that you make freement of your pupils by habituating them to act, whenever possible, under the notion of a good". This is wise advice, from both Spinoza and William James.

The second part of the book consists of three wonderful addresses to students: "The Gospel of Relaxation", the seminal essay "On a Certain Blindness in Human Beings" and its companion essay "What Makes a Life Significant." The first essay is a still timely corrective to the tendency of many Americans to stress and to wrongly-directed effort. But second and third of these essays are critical to James's work in its entirety. The "blindness" to which James refers is the difficulty every person has in knowing the mind of another and in properly and sympathetically valuing what the other person finds important and significant in life. As James states in his Preface to "Talks to Teachers": "The facts and worths of life need many cognizers to take them in. There is no point of view absolutely public and universal." James develops this theme through the use of literary examples drawn from Robert Louis Stevenson, Whitman, Tolstoy, and many other writers.

In the Preface to the "Talks to Teachers and Students" James also underscores the importance of the essay "On a Certain Blindness". This essay is James's most direct statement of the value of pluralism, individualism, and democracy. He writes: "The practical consequence of such a philosophy is the well-known democratic respect for the sacredness of individuality -- is, at any rate, the outward tolerance of whatever is not itself intolerant. ... Religiously and philosophically, our ancient national doctrine of live and let live may prove to have a far deeper meaning than our people now seem to imagine it it to possess."

This short and beautifully written collection of essays is an excellent non-technical introduction to the thought of William James.

Timeless insight

James provides insightful understanding into both the science and art of teaching (which he differentiates). Great for those working in education who wish to reflect on the core values of relationships formed between teacher and student as well as the essential strategies needed to empower students to develop independent learning skills. In a fast changing world submerged in IT it's valuable to reflect on the basic principles and how these can still be implemented in the learning environment today.

The most widely read text in schools of education in the first third of the 20thC, William James's insights about teaching and learning from over 100 years ago are still timely and relevant, and many of his proposals are now being confirmed by cognitive science.
