A very funny read

This was a really enjoyable, funny read. It features a show based on Strictly Come Dancing which is currently on TV, making it extremely relevant.

Amy Lavender is instantly recognisable as being similar to more than a few 'celebrities' over the years. She makes a mistake, one which is caught on camera, and suffers professionally as a result. In order to try and gain her 'celebrity' status once more she is forced to take part in reality tv.

In order to achieve her goals Amy has to do things she really shouldn't, and at the same time learn to dance when she has two left feet. Misunderstandings ensue and she finds herself doubting her own decisions. But are they her decisions, or ones she has been forced to make?

I loved the character of Cora, Amy's upstairs neighbour. When Amy meets Cora she instantly bonds with her. Cora is able to help Amy in ways she couldn't have imagined. And, in a way, Amy repays that favour to Cora right at the end of the story.

The story becomes something more than Amy's as we begin to learn more about Cora's early life and what brought her to make the decisions which dictated how her life ended up. Cora's story is my favourite part of the book. Don't get me wrong, the book as a whole is a great read, Amy's antics are very funny, and her story is a good one. But Cora's story helped make this book, for me at least, what it is.

I recommend this book to fans of Strictly, and also to anyone who wants a feel good story with so much more depth to it than some I have read.

Amy has always loved acting and dreams of becoming a serious actress but being a celebrity has sucked her into the fast lane. Even though she does have a good part on a soap opera. Eventually she loses her loser boyfriend and her job. Babs her agent gets Amy on Strictly Star Dancing. The only problem is Amy cannot dance in any stretch of the imagination. Amy has to take a low rent apartment and agrees to keep an eye on the old lady- Cora upstairs. Then we learn about Cora who does know a thing or two about dancing but also tells of the man Cora loved at the end of the war.
This was an excellent story and plot but actually two stories interacted together. I absolutely loved it. The characters were great especially Amy and Cora. All the ins and outs Amy goes through in this story especially trying to fix her career. Some parts of this story brought a tear to my eye while other parts made me chuckle I highly recommend.
I received an ARC for this story for an honest review.

Lets get ready to dance

This is a modern, easy to read, romance. I enjoyed it. Amy is a soap star with a famous boyfriend. When they fall out, over his infidelity, Amy loses her home and job. She ends up in a flat in Clapham where, for cheap rent she agrees to pop in now and again to her upstairs neighbour, 89 year old Cora. Amy gets a place on a glitzy dancing competition and falls for her dancing partner, Patrick. We read on as Amy decides her future and Cora takes us back in the past. The book is very up to date and easy to read. Really good.

Hard To Read Wealth of Children's Litature Course

If you plan to teach a children's literature course, then this book possesses nearly all of the information, history, and important milestones that you need...if you can get by the stilted language.

It reads well for someone like me who studies/collects children's literature as a personal hobby; however, for the average reader? Get ready for a painful struggle.

I would suggest using it in conjunction with two other books: Jacob & Tunnell's more classroom-focused CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, BRIEFLY and Rebecca Luken's more historcal/applicable balanced CRITICAL HANDBOOK OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.

Soul Sapping Academia

It is hard to imagine a book that could take the wonder of children's literature and more thoroughly destroy it. The cover illustration makes you feel momentarily safe. Then the texts begins and hope is slowly and mercilessly trodden into the dust. Take this for example:

"Another approach to the study of art is recommended by Stephen F. Eisenman and Thomas Crow, who use art criticism that focuses on the relationship between art and ideology, the economic and social conditions expressed in the art (a Marxist approach to criticism)."

Now pause briefly and consider this is a book about *children's* literature. Let us continue to some questions that should be used in this analysis:

"What role does class play in the work of both the artist and the viewer?

In what way might the artwork serve as propaganda?

What is the dominant ideology that the artist challenged?"

I'm now preparing to write a whithering review of the oppression inherent in the "Cat and the Hat".

All of this wouldn't be so bad if books were actually presented. Instead we get lots of small type with a reference to a random children's title in every other paragraph and the impression that children's literature is either dominated by the enlightened academic class or club wielding classist Neanderthals. You know, the kind that make you read books like "Through the Eyes of a Child".

DO NOT USE THIS IN YOUR CLASS. You will be torturing your students in a manner not allowed by the constitution. Hopefully, that at least, will carry some weight.

Worest textbook I have ever read.

I usually like to read my textbooks cover to cover, but for the first time I find a text book unbearable to read. My physics textbooks are more entertaining than this book. The author simply writes thousands of three sentence summaries of children's books and places them in an obtuse sections. When the author is not doing these three sentence summaries she is filling up the book with citing any little idea some random person had. For the love of god just use a footnote and paraphrase so it is at least half readable.

Built to Last became an instant business classic. This audio abridgement is read by the authors, who alternate chapters. Collins is a bit breathlessly enthusiastic, but clear and interesting; Porras, unfortunately, is poorly inflected and wooden. They set out to determine what's special about "visionary" companies--the Disneys, Wal-Marts, and Mercks, companies at the very top of their game that have demonstrated longevity and great brand image. The authors compare 18 "visionary" picks to a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, and so on.

A central myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies start with a great product and are pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. Usually false, Collins and Porras find. Much more important, and a much more telling line of demarcation between a wild success like 3M and an also-ran like Norton, is flexibility. 3M had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were not afraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works."

What makes a visionary company? This book, written by a team from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, compares what the authors have identified as "visionary" companies with selected companies in the same industry. The authors juxtapose Disney and Columbia Pictures, Ford and General Motors, Motorola and Zenith, and Hewlett-Packard and Texas Instruments, to name a few. The visionary companies, the authors found out, had a number of common characteristics; for instance, almost all had some type of core ideology that guided the company in times of upheaval and served as a constant bench mark. Not all the visionary companies were founded by visionary leaders, however. On the whole, this is an intriguing book that occasionally provides rare and interesting glimpses into the inner workings and philosophical foundations of successful businesses. [book:Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies|4122] was one of the first business books I've ever read. At the time, as an aspiring entrepreneur, James C. Collins spoke volume to me and how I should structure an everlasting company. Written by two Stanford University's Graduate School of Business professors, the level of knowledge and experience they jointly possess will exceed your expectations. The main point of the book is to either identify your business as a "clock builder" or a "time teller." Time tellers focus on being the loudest and most disruptive companies, while clock builders are more reserved and focus on growth and preserving their core values for centuries into the future. As a well researched book might indicate, the authors provide a tremendous amount of detail on what makes companies such as Coca-Cola, Citi Bank, Wal-Mart, Walt Disney, Nordstrom, stand the test of time. These companies have been active in our lives for generations and they reveal exactly how they have endured, and how they will continue to endure for many generations to come. Whether you are an entrepreneur, owner, middle management or a salesmen, this book will undoubtably inspire you to reach great heights.

A Must Read for the CEO

Anyone tasked with the daunting responsibility of running an organization is faced with the challenge of culture. In the event that you are the "lucky" successor to a founder or a turn-around situation (my professional scenarios all have been in this realm), the task of what to do, where to go, and how to get there are huge - the culture is either well established, failing, and needs to change, or the culture may have been one of personality, facing a vacuum, and needs to be institutionalized. Collins and Porras look at a series of companies that have transcended this challenge and have developed a visionary culture that withstands the test of time.

Summarizing the basic themes:

* Be an architect and clock builder and design and develop a vision that stand the test of time
* Embrace the "Genius of AND." - do not accept difficult trade-offs and strive for the near impossible
* Preserve the core/stimulate progress - Develop, hone and ruthlessly protect core values, and innovate around that core
* Seek consistent alignment - Align all stakeholders to the vision of the organization and continue to insure alignment

Unlike some of the challenges faced by the companies chosen by Tom Peters in "In Search of Excellence", a 25 year run on Collins book finds many of his study subjects still in the forefront of their industries. Collins is definitely onto something, and is one of the more engaging writers of the genre. Definitely worth the read.

It is not a how-to book. It is not suggesting receipes for your own case to succeed. Rather it is explaining what visinoary companies did different than control group companies (still remarkably successfull compared to sectoral averages). You need to extract your lessons which suits to your spesific case.
I believe that this a good approach. It acknowledges that your case is unique. It also recognizes yourself as capable and willing to progress, hence inspires you about possible vision. In case you need to be convinced you could follow cases or quotations from the research.
This is another good feature because you have the chance to skip sections that %100 agree with author. It makes you fast to read whole book.
I like the coinciding ideas of visionary companies and TOC literature. You could find marks of Blue Ocean Strategies as well in the book.
I feel energized and motivated to feel "do something, now, I can, no need tobe CEO!"

Not to be confused with the works of Umberto Eco.

Natalia "Natasha" Romanova, the Black Widow, has been a fixture of Marvel Comics since her debut in the 1960s, but rarely as a headliner character. She started out as a villain in the pages of "Iron Man", and over the years has been a frequent guest star and partner to such heroes as Daredevil (with whom she co-starred for a good run of issues in the early 1970s), Iron Man (again), and Hercules (when they were together "The Champions"), as well as a member of the Avengers. She's had a few miniseries of her own as well, but has never quite managed the audience for her own solo title. Following her appearance in "Iron Man 2", Marvel decided to give it a shot, with this being the first and ultimately only story written by Marjorie Liu (with art by Daniel Acuna). Based on this, it's unfortunate that Liu didn't have more time with the character, because it's quite good. Spoilers follow.

Prior to the launch of this series, Natasha has spent the last few years as a major supporting character in "Captain America" under the pen of Ed Brubaker (who now also writes her in the pages of "Secret Avengers"), and is now the girlfriend of the new Captain America, James "Bucky" Barnes. Natasha tends not to stay in one place for long, so her supporting cast is pretty much all other superheroes (Bucky, Wolverine, Iron Man, Hawkeye - all but Wolverine being current or ex-boyfriends), which Liu runs with here: a mysterious new presence appears on the scene, who exposes Natasha's secret data collection efforts and attempts to frame her as a spy (similar to the JLA "Tower of Babel" storyline, but refreshingly, Natasha's friends aren't surprised by this nor do they have a problem with it). Natasha's on the run, cut off for a time from her most reliable allies, and a number of prominent Marvel characters put in appearances, including Elektra and Lady Bullseye. Liu adds her own new episodes from Natasha's past as well. The final plot resolution isn't especially revelatory (Liu ultimately backs away from some new villain on a personal vendetta to bring in an old Avengers foe), but it's a good story nonetheless.

Every solo series needs a strong character voice for its lead, and Liu's greatest strength is giving Natasha a very good and recogizable one. She's a believable product of her decades of experiences, tough and extremely capable, compassionate but also not without a vengeful streak. And Liu writes her relationships, particularly with Bucky, very well; their romantic attachment and partnership as superheroes comes across very well. The various guest villain characters from the Marvel Universe are well-done, particularly Lady Bullseye in her first appearance outside a "Daredevil" comic. Daniel Acuna's art surprised me quite a bit; I wasn't previously a fan of his work, but he does a great job of rendering Natasha's world as a mix of spy noir and superheroics.

Sadly under appreciated gem

Been on a Marvel reading jag the last several months. Been getting to know certain characters very well, following their evolution over the years in back issues mostly bought on ebay. Black Widow came into view for me when she became involved in Bucky Barnes' story, which I love. I became a big fan of the Widow from Brubaker's Captain America, mostly. What a great character. What isn't there to like? But what I don't like is how often it seems Marvel let's their creative team play her out as a sexual fantasy. I admit there will always be an element of that in her character, and that's fine. But for me Black Widow: Origins went too far in making her a sorta bimbo who kicks ass, eh, somehow? Because the script needs her to and we'll just say she's a strong women from that? That blows. And I don't know how that became a well respected "classic" and how this series fell off the radar so damn quick. Because frankly I think what the writer began to do with Black Widow here...well without getting into something that will take me all night to write, it just seemed so exciting to me. And on par with whatever Brubaker is up to these days. Seeing Black Widow take the pain of surgery while awake, meeting her old friends, following her on her "this time it's personal" (and isn't it always?) spy mission, it was everything it should have been. And it had Bucky Barnes as her weepy bimbo! The art was nice, too. Not exactly what I would have chosen to go with Majorie Liu's script, but it works. And it seemed down and dirty, which itself is absolutely appropriate for a Black WIdow story.

Please don't hold the limits of my reviewing against the book. I could go on about it, really. Lemme just say, if you want to know the Black Widow at her core, this is the story to read. Skip the Origins. Or at least get this one first.

Spies, superheroes, what's not to like?

Excellent book. Seems a bit over-priced and maybe I should have waited for the TPB to come out, but I didn't pay list price and it was a fun read. One of the draws of Black Widow books is that the superhero is a spy, so essentially this is a spy thriller in graphic novel form, with some popular superheroes as sidekicks. As a bonus for those of us who have been in the Marvel Universe since we were kids, we get some interesting background material on BW.

If you're passionate about having a great bar and serving great cocktails, this is a fantastic book! I went into this knowing that I would be making bitters that would take 3 months to complete. I decided to go all in and make all of the bitters and several of the infusion recipes in the book. In one more month, I will have an incredible bar set up. I bought amber glass bottles with droppers and all the essential ingredients for the bitters on Amazon. The truffle snow and coconut foam recipe with the st. germain cocktail was AMAZING! I had a question about measurements for the bitters, called Barchef in Toronto and they were fantastic, taking about 10 minutes to walk me through the process. If you're passionate about having a well stocked bar and serving great cocktails, this is a great book! Once the bitters are ready, they are huge quantities and will last indefinitely so you are set for the long haul.

This is one of my favorite cocktail books

This is one of my favorite cocktail books. It was one of the first books that I found that gave you all the recipes for everything they use including bitters. There are some fairly complicated recipes contained inside, but there are plenty of simpler drinks as well. The bitters, syrups and infusion recipes might just be worth it even without the cocktail recipes. If you are very new to making cocktails at home, this might not be the first book you should buy, but it should be in your top 3.

Beautiful pictures and creative ideas but it's not practical unless you plan out the drinks you want to make months in advance. Most drinks have ingredients that must be prepared really far in advance. Perhaps we will start planning our Christmas cocktail when the decorations first come out.

Disturbing News for Followers and Followers

This book, as with all Andreas Moritz's books, contains excellent well researched material. I have most of them. However, his website [...]announced on October 21st, 2012, that he has died. Just a week before he was giving and booking interviews and looked vibrant and glowing as he usually does. His facebook page appears to have been taken over by one or two persons who refuse to give the fb fans the truth about his death, and neither admit they are running it. They are commenting as fans but with "authority".
I find the whole thing bizarre and troubling as do many of his genuine fb fans.
Personally, I do not doubt the efficacy of his health system based on cleansing and detoxing because he knew and practiced the system carefully and thoroughly.
What I am troubled about is what happened really to Andreas. He was only 58. And why is his fan page continuing under his name but is monitored and commented on by two individuals who after some investigation are unlikely people that Andreas would entrust his business to.
In sum, buy the books for the knowledge but be aware that there are some unresolved and suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Andreas, and the profits are obviously no longer going to him.
His business Ener-chi Wellness Center is based in Landrum, South Carolina. His wife is called Lilian but has never appeared either in videos or fan pages.
One investigating source said he could find no mention of Andreas' death in the local papers or in any registry. Given the many thousands of followers and fans it is strange that his family hasn't commented at all.
The weird mystery is completely opposite to Andreas' open, honest and generous communication and teachings.
I felt it necessary to convey these findings as hopefully some new facts may surface if people become aware of what has transpired, and might add any other information.

Over priced

Other books by Andreas Moritz are great, but this one is not worth the money. At $2 or $3, it would be OK, but not at $10. This book is only 60 pages (with only the first 37 covering this suject). This book is an excerpt from his larger book Timeless Secrets of Health & Rejuvenation. The Timeless Secrets book is excellent and is a much better purchase than this book.

Not Extremely Memorable, But Well Done

My mother purchased this book for me as a very young girl, along with other collections of short-stories, and I remember being enchanted with it. The legends are fascinating, although I don't think the fact that they were all about young women and girls ever crossed my mind (an observation that leads me to believe this book would be good for boys, as well).
I recently re-read the stories, and was delighted. I remember being confused as a girl, since the places, people, and customs are mostly foreign, and so I wouldn't recommend these books to any one younger then six. And even then, with the lack of pictures, it's great for adults to read to kids (no matter what age, within reason). Worth the money.

This book is awesome, esp. for girls. It features folk tales in which the protagonists are all smart, strong, clever, just girls or women. We read it to my daughter at 4, and at 9, she still goes back and rereads the stories.

Girls who can

It was not until after reading these stories to my daughter, that I realized that the fairy tales my generation of women had grown up usually had heroines who needed to be rescued. The heroines in Tatterhood solve problems, rescue themselves and sometimes their princes. Hopefully girls will identify with these competent and confident heroines. I don't know many women who can afford to sit around in an ivory tower waiting for a prince to rescue them. These are wonderful, amusing tales from another and equally valid perspective.

Yay! Hard to find Pachelbel duet, and hard to play!

We were so happy to find this duet, as all other versions of Pachelbel in piano duet form seem to have disappeared. Be prepared, though - it's not for the faint of heart. This is a challenging edition for both parts, and my son and I anticipate several months of hard work before we can do it justice.

Beautiful but a little difficult

I searched diligently for a duet version of Pachabel's Canon in D to play with my niece at another niece's wedding. We are both early advanced amateurs, and this version challenged us. But it is very pretty.
